The central emergency room serves as the first point of contact for the treatment of various types of medical emergencies.
The planning of the spatial design of the emergency room therefore poses many challenges for hospitals and clinics. Unnecessarily long walking distances for patient care should be avoided as much as possible. In addition, a smooth flow of patients should be ensured in order to avoid crowding situations, because excessively long waiting times can in the worst case have health consequences.
Dr. med. Tim Flasbeck, chief physician of the central emergency department of the Carl-Thiem-Klinikum Cottbus (CTK Cottbus), meets these challenges with an innovative room and operating concept. The heart of the concept is an open care and treatment area. His idea is to reduce shift distances to a minimum by explicitly identifying care areas with a permanently assigned caregiver. The concept thus enables constant eye contact between the patient and the caregiver, creating a better feeling of security for the patient and more pleasant work for the caregiver. The time that is otherwise lost on the way can now be invested in value-adding activities and capacities can be used more effectively.
In order to be able to make a comparison with the initial situation in the emergency room, Dr. Flasbeck let PLANFOX model his modern room concepts. Using selected key figures such as the shift routes in nursing, it was possible to estimate how many resources, for example in nursing, could be mobilized through highly efficient room and operating concepts.
The simulation enabled a fact-based concept to be identified which guarantees efficient and smooth operation in the emergency room even with significantly higher patient numbers.
